Magnitude 7.4 earthquake strikes Davao Oriental, tsunami warning issued

(Updated 2; 5:18 p.m.) An earthquake of magnitude 7.4 struck Davao Oriental, on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

Phivolcs initially reported the earthquake’s magnitude as 7.6 and later revised it to 7.5.

The quake’s epicenter was located at coordinates 07.09°North, 127.09°East – 062 kilometers South 77° E of Manay,Davao Oriental. It had a depth of focus of 10 km.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami threat, saying hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km (186 miles) of the earthquake’s epicenter.

European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre had earlier pegged the magnitude at 7.2 and 7.4.

Phivolcs said it is expecting aftershocks and damage due to the tremor.
