A station on the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) drew attention after staff served as “standees” holding signs about a non-functioning escalator on the platform.

On Wednesday, February 11, a Facebook user shared a video and two photos taken at the MRT Shaw Boulevard Station, which he said were “taken on different dates.”

These showed staff holding signage for commuters.

“DOTr, anong kalokohan ‘to? Ang gusto namin ayusin niyo ang escalators, hindi ‘yung kung anu-ano pinapagawa niyo sa tauhan niyo!” the Facebook user asked in a public group.

“Taken on different dates. Ang siste nila, papatayuin mga staff habang hawak ‘yung tarpaulin printout about sa sirang escalator sa Greenfield side ng station,” the Facebook user added.

“Isang malaking kalokohan! Bilisan nyio na lang ayusin ang sirang escalators, hindi ‘yung walang kwenta mga pinag-uutos niyo sa tauhan niyo,” the Facebook user continued.

The post also spread to X (formerly Twitter), where some users said they had encountered similar incidents as early as “last week.”

“Hugas kamay lang naman nakalagay,” one commenter wrote, referring to what the signage reportedly stated.

“Kesyo hindi gumagana ‘yung escalator going to Greenfield (actually, pati ‘yung Parklea side) at hindi daw nila kasalanan ‘yun,” the X user added.

“Saw this, like, last week pa and thought it was a one-time thing… wdym [what do you mean] andoon pa rin sila and maghapon? Super b*** naman ng nag-isip nito?” another wrote.

“@dotrmrt3, ever heard of a signage stand,” a different Pinoy commented, tagging the X account of the MRT management.

“Just imagine the cost of manpower for people holding these tarps vs [versus] fabricating more visible [signage.] Whoever initiated this should be fired,” another wrote.

“Have been seeing them rin daily, ‘di ko gets why info [information] dispersing has to be this way,” a different X user commented.

The MRT management has not yet released a statement regarding the incident.

Meanwhile, the same MRT station made headlines this week after one of its station supervisors, not sanctioned by the MRT management, placed signage on an escalator at the platform.

The sign read: “Each step you climb is a gift to your heart, lungs, and muscles.”

The sign drew flak, as some felt it overlooked commuters with impairments and senior citizens who cannot easily use stairs.

The MRT management has since removed the signage and assured the public that malfunctioning escalators on station platforms “will be addressed immediately, with repairs prioritized to ensure minimal disruption.”
