WATCH | Duterte’s children rate their father’s first year in office

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, seen in News5 video grab after the SONA as she rates the performance of her father in his first year as President. Duterte father and daughter have worked hard to make Davao a draw for investors and tourists, and a project to expand the city's international airport will soon boost that effort.

President Rodrigo Duterte is wont to crack jokes about the grades he got while still a kid in school, about his “pasang awa” ratings, or just barely passing.

When asked how he rates his performance during his first year in office, the response from the President was not too surprising: “I am not a guy who likes to raise myself … It’s up to people to do that. You can rate me good, very good, excellent or very poor. I don’t mind. I just do my duties.”

But one of his children, Davao City mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, said he deserves a 10 out of 10: “Well he’s doing good. He’s up to the job. And he’s looking forward. I can see his pronouncements that he’s looking forward to the implementation of his projects for the country for the next 5 years.”

Most of his children say they seldom get to see, much less talk with, President Duterte due to the pressure of his work, but this was no big deal.

His eldest son, Paolo, who is Vice Mayor of Davao City, joins his sister in saying, “bigyan mo ng panahon na makapahinga ka … Marami ka namang mauutusan kung may tatrabahuin (Set aside some time to rest. There are many people for you to relegate the work that needs to be done).”

Mayor Sara quips in: “Relax lang kasi we cannot save the world. Do one thing at a time.”
