Author Marie Kondo, the globally renowned tidying expert whose KonMari Method transformed how people manage clutter, is now embracing a new chapter, one that leans into imperfection, unpredictability, and the everyday chaos of family life.

After giving birth to her third child, Marie admitted that tidying had taken a backseat to motherhood.

“My system for tidying took the world by storm, but things had to change as I needed to focus on my family. Especially after I became a mother. There was a moment when I realized I couldn’t do it all,” Marie said.

“Run a business, care for my family, and maintain the image of a perfectly tidy home,” she added.

This realization forms the heart of travel and experiences platform Klook’s latest campaign called “The Best You” which invites people to reimagine travel not just as a form of escape, but as a way to reconnect with themselves.

In a return to her roots, Marie revisited Japan for a deeply personal journey of rediscovery. She took part in activities far removed from the world of color-coded drawers: channeling focus like a samurai, dancing in a robot suit, and participating in a traditional kintsugi workshop, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold, symbolizing beauty in imperfection.

“Now I’m coming back to where it all started, to discover what can spark joy in this new phase of my life through travel and embracing life’s beautiful surprises,” Marie said.

During the kinstsugi workshop, she said she learnt about the “beauty in imperfection.”

“It’s not about perfection, it’s about looking straight at the beauty of what’s in front of you. This is a very typical Japanese thought, and it resonated with me,” she said.

While she became a household name through her emphasis on tidiness and order, Marie said her priorities have shifted.

“I’ve always been focused on balance and finding joy, not perfection. I found peace in accepting my imperfection. That gives me new energy to try new things. I hope others feel encouraged to do the same,” Marie said.

The campaign reflects a broader theme Klook hopes to convey: that travel is a powerful catalyst for self-discovery, and that experiencing something new can help people reconnect with the version of themselves they may have put on pause.
