Horror fans turned out for “Insidious: Out of the Further” as the latest installment in the supernatural franchise set a new record for the biggest opening day for a horror movie in the Philippines.
The film earned P51,682,703 on its first day, surpassing the 2023 record set by “Insidious: The Red Door,” according to Columbia Pictures Industries Inc., the film’s Philippine distributor.
The new installment also posted the biggest opening day for an “Insidious” movie in the country.
Midnight screenings were among those that drew moviegoers, with SM North EDSA recording the highest gross among Philippine cinemas at P1.82 million.
SM Megamall followed with P1.35 million, while SM Fairview placed third with P1.31 million. Other cinemas in the top 10 included SM Clark, SM Mall of Asia, Robinsons Antipolo, SM Santa Rosa, SM CDO Downtown, Ayala Malls Cinemas Trinoma and Ayala Malls Cinemas Centrio Mall.
The film’s performance comes as the “Insidious” franchise continues to explore the supernatural realm known as “The Further.”
In “Insidious: Out of the Further,” Amelia Eve stars as Gemma, a young mother who discovers that she can enter The Further. She later learns that she can also bring its inhabitants into the real world, giving the entities a new way to cross over.
Lin Shaye returns as Elise Rainier, with Filipino-Puerto Rican Brandon Perea also part of the cast.
Producer James Wan said horror gives filmmakers room to explore subjects that may be difficult to address through other genres.
“The reason a lot of filmmakers really love playing in this particular playground is that horror allows us to say a lot of things we can’t otherwise say with other films,” Wan said.
Producer Jason Blum, meanwhile, said director Jacob Chase brought a personal approach to the latest chapter.
“‘Insidious’ keeps going because every few years a filmmaker walks in with a reason to make it personal, not just a reason to make it scary. Jacob had that from the first meeting. Once I heard his take, the only job left was to get out of his way and let him build it,” Blum said.
Chase directed and wrote the film, with the story credited to Chase and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Blum, Oren Peli, Wan and Leigh Whannell served as producers.
“Insidious: Out of the Further” is now showing in Philippine cinemas. The film began its Philippine theatrical run on Wednesday, August 19.
