Arnold Van Opstal, a 6-foot-9 center who was once a collegiate star, may soon realize his potential after he was traded to the GlobalPort Batang Pier from the San Miguel Beermen.

“We’re hoping he’ll get those minutes from GlobalPort,” San Miguel Beer team manager Gee Abanilla told InterAksyon. “We wish AVO the best of luck.”

Van Opstal, a former La Salle stalwart, was relegated to being a bench warmer for San Miguel as he struggled to secure regular minutes in a team that has a loaded big man rotation comprised of three-time MVP June Mar Fajardo, Yancy De Ocampo, Gabby Espinas and Jay-R Reyes.

“Of course, any player who isn’t given much playing time or a lot of times didn’t play at all, will lose his confidence,” Abanilla added.

It was the Batang Pier who sought for Van Opstal’s services, according to Abanilla: “They asked for AVO. They’re looking for a big player that could help them in their campaign.”

As for Pessumal, the Beermen got another swingman who can provide spark off the bench.

“Of course, Pessumal will be a good addition as we have a lot of creators in our team and his addition means we’re going to have a floor spacer as he is a shooter. The trade is a win-win situation for both teams,” Abanilla said.
