Sister Zenaida “Zeny” Cabrera, a strong advocate for restorative justice, died Tuesday, the Novaliches diocese announced.

Sr. Cabrera, a member of the Sisters of the Holy Eucharist, passed away at a hospital in Quezon City after being admitted following a heart attack on Saturday.

She was 73. Cabrera worked for more than two decades in the Novaliches diocese’s Restorative Justice Ministry. She also served as the coordinator of Caritas Manila’s Restorative Justice Ministry.

“Her tireless efforts, boundless compassion, and unwavering faith brought hope, dignity, and transformation to countless lives,” the diocese said.

“Sr. Zeny’s legacy of love and service will forever inspire those who continue the mission of Christ among the marginalized PDLs (persons deprived of liberty),” it added.

The Episcopal Commission on Prison Pastoral Care (ECPPC) of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines also expressed sorrow over her death.

“I really cannot thank her enough for the wonderful apostolate she has done for our beloved PDLs,” said Bishop Oscar Jaime Florencio of the Military Ordinariate of the Philippines and ECPPC chairman.

Sr. Cabrera was last seen in public during the opening of the Jubilee Year celebration at Quezon City Jail on Jan. 9.
