As Filipinos grapple with growing political division, Cardinal Jose Advincula of Manila is urging Catholics to turn to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as a source of healing, peace and national unity.

In a message ahead of the June 12 Solemnity, Advincula said the devotion offers a timely response to a society marked by conflict, uncertainty and polarization.

“In these times marked by uncertainty, conflict, and deep political divisions, we are called to return to the Heart of Jesus, the true source of peace, compassion, and unity,” Advincula said.

The cardinal encouraged families, parishes, schools and communities to renew consecration during June, traditionally dedicated to the devotion.

He described the Sacred Heart as a reminder of Christ’s merciful love that welcomes sinners, heals wounds, strengthens the weary and unites what is divided.

“The Sacred Heart reminds us of the tender and merciful love of Jesus: a love that welcomes sinners, heals wounds, strengthens the weary, and unites what has been divided,” Advincula said.

He stressed that devotion should not remain confined to prayers and religious practices but should inspire concrete actions that reflect Christ’s compassion in everyday life.

“May our consecration to the Sacred Heart not remain a mere devotion, but become a way of life,” he said.

The Manila archbishop also urged Filipinos to safeguard fraternity and respect despite political differences and to pray for peace and dialogue worldwide.

“We pray as well for our beloved country, that amid differences in political views and convictions, we may never lose our sense of fraternity, respect, and common responsibility for the good of the nation,” he said.

The Feast of the Sacred Heart is celebrated on the Friday following the second Sunday after Pentecost. This year, it falls on June 12, the same day Filipinos mark the 127th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine independence.
