Celie Veloso seeks clemency for Mary Jane
Celia Veloso seeks clemency for her daughter Mary Jane Veloso, incarcerated in Indonesia death row on drug trafficking charges.

MANILA – Celia Veloso, the mother of Mary Jane Veloso, who is incarcerated in Indonesia’s death raw on drug trafficking charges, on Wednesday sought help from Malacanang to try and persuade the Indonesian authorities to spare Mary Jane from prospective execution.

This comes two days before Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo is scheduled to arrive to attend the Association of South East Asian Summit to be hosted in Manila.Click and watch this video report below:

Celia paid a courtesy call at the office of Presidential Adviser on OFW Concerns Abdullah Mamao.

Mary Jane’s execution has been put on hold in Indonesia, in deference to a diplomatic request for a stay due to the emergence of a human trafficking criminal case that could have a direct bearing on Mary Jane’s case.

Celia Veloso said the case has been dragging for two years, and she is gradually losing hope that something positive can come out of all this.

Mary Jane’s side has six witnesses. Ranged against them are 19 witnesses on the respondents’ side.

This is adding to the sense of desperation on the part of Celia.

In the meantime, the migrant welfare advocacy group, Migrante, through its program coordinator Lorence Castillo, said it hopes the government can renew efforts to seek clemency for Mary Jane.

Migrante informed the Office of OFW Concerns that there are at least 81 other Filipinos languishing on death rows in foreign countries.
