WATCH | ‘Termite’ Gang hits Chinabank branch in Fairview, Quezon City

Recovered from the apparent weekend heist were excavation tools used by the so-called Termite Gane.

Robbers operating by digging their way underneath the surface to the venue of their intended heist, which earned for them the moniker Termite Gang, hit a branch of the Chinabank situated in Fairview, Quezon City over the weekend.

The operations manager and the security guards were greeted by an unexpected sight when they opened the branch for business on Monday morning: Someone’s been digging through the ground and there were scattered soil and dirt, crowbars, screwdrivers and digging implements, and some of the bank’s paraphernalia in an astonishing scene marked by excavation disarray.

The heavy door of the bank vault had been pried open, and bank staff said it was going to take some time to make an inventory and ascertain just how much had been carted away by the Termite Gang.

The robbers even dismantled the two surveillance camera recorders but oddly left them behind, soiled and dirtied.

According to Police Supt.Tomas Nuñez, the perpetrators are called the Termite Gang because their modus operandi is to dig through the foundation of the bank premises, “just like termites. But this is no laughing matter. We suspect this has been carried out by persons with mining know-how, because it’s not a casual thing to be digging through the ground facing upward.”

Based on the tell-tale traces of footprints, the law enforcement investigators surmise there must have been at least three robbers who executed the heist.

The apparent entry and exit points was determined to ba a drainage manhole located some 100 meters away from the bank.
