Lucy Rose recently returned to Manila to promote her new album, “Something’s Changing.” Local fans had first seen her perform live in 2014 at the Wanderland Music Festival, and again last November in a highly anticipated solo show.

In an interview with Interaksyon, Lucy admitted that she had grown quite fond of the Filipino audience, considering it was her third time to perform here in a span of three years.

“I like it here because I feel like everyone’s just a bit wilder and more spirited. And that’s quite nice ‘cause I love that within a gig, not really know what’s gonna happen or who’s gonna shout something out and the unexpected. But yeah, the energy here is insane. I don’t know what’s in your tap water but it’s good, whatever it is,” she said.

The English indie-folk singer-songwriter is popularly known for “Shiver,” a single from her debut album which was also used as a closing song for an episode of the show “Girls” starring Len Dunham, and the infectious single “Night Bus,” among others.

Apart from her considerable talent, Lucy’s effort to connect with her fans is yet another reason why she has earned their loyalty. Last year, she embarked on a DIY tour wherein she depended on her fans to book gigs for her in venues. Lucy had no entourage except for her husband, and they stayed with the fans who invited her in their own homes. Lucy played for free in all venues as they backpacked around South America.

A documentary on her South American tour, also titled “Something’s Changing,” was screened during last week’s event. If the audience in attendance at 19 East in Paranaque was any indication, Lucy Rose’s fan base in the Philippines remains unfazed.

With the help of two touring session musicians, Lucy performed for a swarm of loyal fans who were contented to sit on the floor of the venue, earnestly watching her play her guitar or electric piano as she sang handpicked tracks from all of her three albums.

After performing her second song “Middle of the Bed,” she expressed her gratitude, saying, “I want to thank all of you for coming tonight. Cause I know that tickets are never cheap. I wish they could be free entry, that would be a dream, all the time. So thank you very much for spending your money. I feel really guilty that you have to pay to come and see us. But we’re gonna do everything we can to make sure you have a great night tonight.”

Lucy’s repertoire for the evening included the her aforementioned hit singles, “Nebraska” and “Like an Arrow” from her sophomore album “Work It Out,” as well as more recent songs from her new record, such as “Second Chance,” “Floral Dresses,” and “Moirai.”

After Lucy’s set, a handful of rising local indie artists took turns performing on stage, namely Ben & Ben, The Sun Manager, The Ransom Collective, Fools & Foes, and 16-year-old Elise Huang. The show was produced by Bandwagon Philippines.
