Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto shared pieces of advice as Filipinos choose their community leaders in the 2023 Barangay and Sangguaniang Kabataan Elections on Monday.
The city chief on Sunday, October 29 shared a video of him sharing tips on how he votes aspirants in the village-based polls.
Sotto said he usually chooses an honest, capable and hardworking candidate.
If he is unsure and cannot choose between two candidates, however, Sotto said he will pick the newer aspirant and someone with lesser campaign spending.
“Hindi niyo kailangan gayahin, pero ito po ‘yung sa akin lang,” the millennial mayor said in the video posted on his Facebook page.
Sotto said that he considers bets who spend big on election campaigns as a major “red flag,” especially if they are already in office.
“Mula sa national hanggang sa barangay level, ang pinakamalaking red flag sa mga kandidato ay ‘yung gumagastos ng ubod ng laki,” he said.
“‘Pag nakikita natin, namimili ng boto, ‘pag alam natin milyon milyon ang ginagastos, ibig lang sabihin nun — lalo na ‘pag incumbent — ibig lang sabihin nun, ‘yung pinamimigay nila, kung nagpapamudmod ng pera bago mag-eleksyon, ang ibig lang sabihin nun, pwede palang gamitin ang pera na ‘yun sa mga serbisyo ng pamahalaan pero kinupit nila para sa eleksyon, meron silang panggastos,” Sotto added.
“Hindi natin alam magkano naiwan sa bulsa nila. Simple lang po, ‘wag na nating gawing komplikado pa. ‘Yan ang mga pinakamalaking red flag. Huwag nating kakalimutan,” he continued.
The Commission on Elections announced that the elections commenced in 201,836 voting precincts nationwide this morning, with voting hours open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.
Reports said there are 672,432 seats available in the electoral race, with more than 1.41 million people filing their candidacies.
