MANILA, Philippines – A Cebu Pacific flight that was bound for Manila from Kuwait was forced to divert to Kolkota in India after a passenger went into labor midair.

A statement issued by the airline’s corporate communications director Ma. Rosario L. Lagman early Friday evening said the flight had detoured to Kolkota at 5:20 p.m. because of the “medical emergency.”

“The expectant mother reported contractions midair. She was assisted by the cabin crew, along with three other passengers who were nurses, while the plane was diverted to the nearest airport,” said Logarta.

The aircraft landed safely at 6 p.m., according to Logarta and CebuPac “is coordinating with local authorities in Kolkata to provide immediate medical attention” to the passenger “upon landing at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.”

“We regret any inconvenience this medical emergency may have caused our other passengers. We sincerely hope for understanding as the safety of all our passengers remains our highest priority,” Logarta said.

“We will provide updates as soon as possible,” she added.
