The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) on Thursday sounded the alarm about the apparent spread of the injectable form of shabu, or poor man’s cocaine (methamphetamine hydrochloride).
According to Derrick Carreon, Public Information Chief of PDEA, the hazards that injectable shabu poses does not just fall on the drug-using community but also on the health sector, because indiscriminate use and sharing of needles potentially amplifies the risks of contracting diseases like the Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
“Because the users claim intravenous (IV) use of shabu can even enhance the sex drive, it lends them to practice indiscriminate sex especially when they are already under the influence and not fully aware or in control of a situation. Napaka delikado po nito at nakakatakot (This is precarious and fearsome),” Carreon tells News5.
The danger is much more pronounced because the drug is injected directly to the bloodstream. “It spreads quicker,” added Carreon.
