After the positive confirmation and verification of reports regarding the existence of bird flu in the towns of Jaen and San Isidro in the Province of Nueva Ecija, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has put the two municipalities under a declaration of State of Calamity.
This is part of contingency and containment measures, and sets in motion the expeditious release of calamity resources aimed at protection and rehabilitation.
On August 18, Department of Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol confirmed detection of the Bird Flu virus in two barangays at Jaen and San Isidro, after surveillance and monitoring tests conducted there.
The provincial governor, Czarina Umali, assured that proper steps have been put into play in response to the situation, including the reiteration that it is safe to consume poultry, according to representatives of the Department of Health, provided it is cooked and there is no trace of uncooked blood.
Persons who have been handling contaminated fowl or carcasses, however, should undergo strict evaluation tests.
The program for protectively depopulating the barangays in Jaen and San Isidro of fowls has been put into play.
Governor Umali has mobilized relevant units of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the Veterinary Branch of the Provincial Health Office, and the Provincial Engineering Office.
All of the response efforts, she added, are being executed in close coordination and collaboration National Level agencies, including the Office of Civil Defense, Philippine Army, Philippine National Police, Department of Health and Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Animal Industry.
The local government units of Jaen and San Isidro, in particular, are receiving direct guidance and advisories from the Office of the Governor.
