As a fellow host, television personality and news anchor Gretchen Ho expressed her thoughts on comedian Jo Koy‘s hosting at the 81st Golden Globe Awards.

The 52-year-old Filipino-American trended on social media for the mixed reactions he received when he delivered his opening monologue at the first major film and television awards show in Hollywood since the end of the strikes.
Jo Koy quipped about “Barbie” being a movie “based on a plastic doll with big boobies” and took a dig at “Oppenheimer’s” lengthy runtime, saying that he has just watched its “first season.”
He also quipped that there are “fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift” at the Golden Globes 2024 compared to National Football League coverages.
The Grammy award-winning singer took a sip of wine after Jo Koy’s joke.
Rolling Stone noted that the Fil-Am comedian’s jokes “earned groans and few laughs,” while The Hollywood Reporter said he “struggled a bit to generate laughs.”
The Vulture also called out the comic for “immediately throwing his writers under the bus” when he failed to generate as much laughter as he had hoped, adding that his hosting was “cringeworthy.”
Jo Koy is the first half-Pinoy to host the prestigious Golden Globes, which serves as the kickoff to the Hollywood film and television awards season.
Despite the honor, some fellow Filipinos did not cheer him in his hosting gig which they found unamusing.

Gretchen was among those who aired her thoughts on Jo Koy’s performance, commenting as a fellow host.
This came after BuzzFeed deputy editorial director Spencer Althouse commented that the comedian went “off-script” after “one of his jokes bombed.”
“‘I got the gig 10 [ten] days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up. You’re kidding me, right? Slow down. I wrote some of these, and they’re the ones you’re laughing at,'” Spencer wrote, quoting Jo Koy.

Gretchen saw his comment and said that “hosts are always, always responsible for their scripts.”
“Whether it’s your own or not, at the end of the day, it’s your face and career on the line,” she added.
“This was such a huge stage, and a wasted opportunity,” Gretchen concluded with a pensive face emoji.

Jo Koy previously said that hosting the Golden Globes was “extra special” for him since it was the moment when he got to make his Filipino family “proud.”
He, however, admitted that he only had less than two weeks to prepare for the gig.
Other major awards show hosts like Jimmy Kimmel had months to prepare for the Oscars, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
