The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reminded motorists of the importance of maintaining safe distances while driving on the roads.
The traffic authority on Sunday, October 6, posted a snippet from one of its cameras for traffic monitoring activities which featured a motorcycle hitting the rear of a sports utility vehicle driving steadily.
The rider briefly fell from the impact.
The video was accompanied by the background music of Jvckin and Faithroze’s “Keep Your Distance.”
“DISTANSYA AMIGO!” the MMDA wrote on social media.
“Ang tamang distansya mula sa ibang sasakyan ay hindi lamang nakatutulong upang maiwasan ang banggaan, kundi nagbibigay din ito ng sapat na oras upang tumugon kung may hindi inaasahang pangyayari,” it added.
The agency said that its Metrobase or Operations Monitoring and Control Group regularly monitors traffic conditions and accidents on major roads in Metro Manila.
The MMDA said the public may contact the Metrobase hotline 136 for immediate response if they encounter any road emergency.
Meanwhile, defensive driving states that a safe distance between cars must always be followed to prevent rear-end accidents and other collisions.
The recommended technique is to follow the three-second rule, which advises drivers to maintain at least three seconds of distance between their vehicle and the one in front of them.
This distance allows drivers enough time to react if the vehicle in front suddenly stops or slows down.
To measure this distance, a driver can choose a landmark. Once the car in front passes that landmark, the driver should wait at least three seconds before passing it themselves.
