MANILA, Philippines — Government troops killed nine suspected New People’s Army guerrillas in a clash early Wednesday in Nueva Ecija province.

At least one more rebel and a soldier, identified only as Corporal Buenavista of Charlie Company, 84th Infantry Battalion, were wounded.

Two of the fatalities were identified as Joey Manangan, alias “Ka Razul,” allegedly the leader of the rebel band, and Guia Tucay.

Troops recovered assault rifles, ammunition and backpacks.

Government operations are continuing in the area around the encounter site.
