Law enforcers have arrested the suspect in the killing of the mayor of Bien Unido, Bohol, Gisela Boniel, who is also a commercial pilot.

The late mayor’s husband and alleged mastermind, Bohol Provincial Board Member Niño Rey Boniel, was taken into custody by the Police Regional Office-Central Visayas.

Piecing together the various elements of the case, the police are looking at the possibility that, based on information provided by Angela Leyson, a close friend of mayor Boniel, her husband abducted her from a diving resort, ostensibly to bring her to Cebu, but had her killed and her body thrown into the sea.

During the arrest of Niño Rey Boniel, a visibly emotional Angela was heard shrieking, in Filipino: “You didn’t do me in; that’s where you made a mistake! That’s him, the sonavab**ch. There’s your suspect!”

According to Leyson, she accompanied the mayor to the Provincial capitol, Tagbilaran City, to initiate annulment proceedings against Rey Boniel.

They also passed by the office of the Commission on Audit to file a graft complaint against Boniel for non-completion of PhP2 million worth of projects.

Upon their return to Bien Unido, they proceeded to a dive camp to rest.

At past midnight, Boniel reportedly barged into their room accompanied by five other men, who tried to do them harm. The mayor pleaded with Boniel to spare Leyson.

Leyson was unable to resist as Boniel and the men took the mayor away.

Police Regional Office-Central Visayas Director Noli Taliño related that, upon investigation, it appeared that Mayor Gisela Boniel was killed on their way to Cebu by motorized boat, and that her body was thrown into the sea.

The mayor’s body has still to be found.

Boniel did not put up a fight when law enforcers went to arrest him.
