MANILA, Philippines — An official of the Bureau of Internal Revenue was gunned down just outside his office in Quezon City Wednesday morning, a crime captured by a closed circuit television camera.

The footage showed Alberto Enriquez, 49, chief of the assessment section of Revenue District Office 28, who had just parked his white SUV in front of an apartelle along West Avenue around 7 a.m., taking something from the back seat when a man riding pillion on a motorcycle idling by the side the street got down and shot him in the head, killing him instantly.

The killers then sped away on the motorbike.

Superintendent Igmedio Bernaldez, chief of Quezon City Police District Station 2, said a 9mm shell was recovered from the crime scene. Investigators also recovered P57,870 cash in a bag inside the victim’s vehicle.

Colleagues of Enriquez were hard pressed to think of any reason why anyone would want to kill him.

“I know this guy, napakabait nitong taong ito. Madali syang kausap. Hindi siguro ito (he was a very good person. He was easy to talk to. This does not seem) work-related,” BIR district director Marina de Guzman.

She added out that as head of the assessment section, Enriquez did not handle any investigations, much less controversial cases.

Dito lang siya sa office eh. Nagmo-monitor lang siya ng mga trabaho ng mga revenue officers, assessment group. Ang trabaho ay nagmo-monitor ng letters of authority na naisyu sa mga taxpayers (He just stayed in the office. He monitored the work of the revenue officers, the assessment group. His work was to monitor the letters of authority issued to taxpayers),” De Guzman said.

But police said they were not yet ruling out that the murder was work-related.

Investigators intend to look at other shooting incidents to see if the same motorcycle may have been used in previous crimes.

The BIR will also undertake its own probe.

Last November, a BIR official was also gunned down in Katipunan, Quezon City but the alleged gunman was arrested a month after the incident.
