Students studying forestry at a state university in Aklan traded sheets of paper for real leaves when they took part in a quiz activity.
Part-time college instructor Kynth Edrel Rebaño, who runs the page “Aklanong Manggugubat” on Facebook, shared that students at Aklan State University–Banga Campus used leaves for a quiz in the Botany subject.
Leaves from trees and plants were used for the activity, he said.
“Bukod sa pagiging kakaiba ng activity, ipinapakita rin nito na may mga alternatibong materyales na maaaring gamitin sa ilang simpleng gawain,” Rebaño, a forestry graduate, wrote on his page.
“Sa mas malawak na pananaw, ang pagbawas sa paggamit ng paper products ay maaaring makatulong sa pagbawas ng pangangailangan sa produksyon ng papel at sa paggamit ng kahoy bilang pangunahing raw material nito,” he added.
“Higit sa lahat, nagkaroon ang mga estudyante ng pagkakataong gamitin mismo ang mga dahon na bahagi ng kanilang pinag-aaralan sa Botany, isang simpleng activity na may koneksyon sa learning, resourcefulness, at environmental awareness,” the instructor said.
In 2022, students from West Visayas State University School of Agriculture in Calinog, Iloilo, also used banana leaves instead of paper for a quiz.
Niel Amaca, who was a part-time instructor at the university at the time, said “it could be a good strategy” to keep the students active in class.
Paper is made from cellulose, with trees being the main source of cellulose fiber, or wood pulp.
