MANILA, Philippines — The opening of classes for public elementary and high schools, including in Mindanao, which is under martial law, will push through as scheduled on June 5, the Department of Education said Thursday.

At the same time, DepEd said schools “will not be used as evacuation centers” for those fleeing the continued fighting in Marawi City between government forces and the Maute group, which prompted the declaration of martial law.

“In Marawi City, the provincial capitol and the Mindanao State University will serve” as evacuation centers, DepEd said.

It also issued a reminder on the “neutrality of schools and temporary learning spaces as zones of peace” and urged that “students, teachers, and personnel must be spared from any form of violence, intimidation, or threat.”
