MANILA – The bicameral Commission on Appointments unanimously approved Wednesday the ad interim appointment of General Rey Leonardo Guerrero as Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff.
Before his appointment was brought to plenary, Guerrero’s case was tackled on Wednesday morning by a CA committee, which also unanimously endorsed it.
Guerrero, named by President Rodrigo Duterte to replace Major General Eduardo M. Año, will reach on Dec. 17 the mandatory retirement age in the military of 56 years. It is unclear if his term will be extended.
His predecessor Año served 10 months.
Earlier, last Nov. 8, LtGen Guerrero was promoted to the rank of General. Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and LtGen Salvador Melchor Mison Jr, AFP Vice Chief of Staff donned the four-star insignia on General Guerrero in a Donning of Ranks Ceremony at the new Philippine Air Force Hall of Flags, Headquarters in Villamor Air Base, Pasay City.
Guerrero was chief of the Davao-based Eastern Mindanao Command when Duterte named him AFP chief last Oct. 25.
He is a member of the Philippine Military academy Class of 1984.
