MANILA, Philippines — The Manila Economic and Cultural Office confirmed Thursday night that the Filipina reported missing after the 6.4 magnitude earthquake that hit Hualien, Taiwan on Tuesday had died.

In a television interview, Lito Banayo, MECO chairman, said the body of the caretaker from Abulug, Cagayan, had been found in the rubble of a building.

“We have to confirm that unfortunately she was not able to survive the strong earthquake in Hualien,” he said, adding Philippine labor officials had already informed the Filipina’s next of kin.

Reports placed the death toll in the quake at 10 as rescuers continued to search for more than a dozen people still missing.
