MANILA, Philippines — Could it be the Yuletide spirit?
On Friday, Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno attended the Supreme Court’s Christmas party and bonded with the high tribunal’s employees, her face lighting up with a sweet smile as if there were no moves to oust her from power.
While her critics, including her colleagues, were up in arms over her allegedly impeachable offenses, the top magistrate let her hair down as she danced with the high court’s Associate Justice Mariano del Castillo during the gathering.
Noticeably, justices Teresita Leonardo-De Castro, Noel Tijam, and Francis Jardeleza, who testified in the House of Representatives’ December 11 hearing on the impeachment complaint against Sereno, were not there to celebrate the supposedly joyous occasion.
And while Justice Diosdado Peralta was at the party, many observed that he avoided attracting attention as he chose to seat at the back, near Court administrator Jose Midas Marquez, another resource person in the House hearing on the impeachment complaint against Sereno.
