An internet slang famous among the young generation found itself being part of a title of a Pinoy bedroom pop artist’s single.
Teen singer-songwriter Shoti, whose real name is Jared Lim Almendras, followed up his viral debut track “LDR” with another slowcore bop that shows an emotional side of the young artist.
“LDR” became popular in Southeast Asia with the help of TikTok, the popular platform among Gen Zers (Generation Z) like him.
Philippine STAR author Baby Gil describes the track as a “simple chill R&B” that reminds her of King of Pop Michael Jacskon’s “I’ll Always Love You.”
Shoti followed it up with another single, “waiting 4 u (delulu).”
The song’s title features the internet slang “delulu,” a term for “delusional” which was popularized by the youth.
Reports said it has its roots in the K-pop stan community and was originally associated with the “delusion” that fans can end up with their idols.
Meanwhile, Shoti’s new single is a commentary for individuals who find themselves in relationships without clear labels.
Drawing from acoustic instrumentation with laid-back dreaminess, the young talent delivers a candid remark about the state of young love in the time of Discord and digital nativity.
In “waiting 4 u (delulu),” the breakout star provides an insightful observation about the trend prevalent among youngsters these days.
“They share a deep connection and spend a lot of time together, yet they haven’t established official boyfriend-girlfriend status,” Shoti explained.
“In today’s generation, I’ve observed that many people, particularly from Gen Z, tend to have unrealistic expectations about relationships that may not align with reality. They yearn for a type of relationship that may not actually exist,” he added.
Shoti penned the track in a mix of English and Cebuano, reflecting the nuances of his branding through a no-filter lens.
“I compose songs spontaneously, and the Cebuano elements in my music flow naturally. I cherish its uniqueness, setting my songs apart. In the future, I plan to incorporate Filipino or Tagalog to enrich my musical expressions further,” the teen singer said.
He also self-produced the track in his bedroom and did everything on his own regarding its creative direction.
“I’ve always enjoyed the process of creating, writing, and recording my own songs at my own pace and space,” the Cebu-based artist said.
“I take the art form seriously, and I take pride in the fact that it comes from a place of vulnerability and rawness,” Shoti added.
