70 dead marine turtles recovered in northern Palawan

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Philippines — Police recovered 70 dead marine turtles (pawikan) in the northern Palawan town of Dumaran early Thursday morning.

Chief Inspector Arnel Bagona, Dumaran chief of police, told Philippine News Agency the turtles were found in a large motorboat off the shores of Barangay Bacao around 2:30 a.m.

Rico Gonzales and Kim Aristotiles, boatmen from Taytay, were arrested.

Bagona said they believe the turtles were being transported to Balabac.

Charges of violation of the wildlife trafficking law will be filed against the two suspects.
