MANILA, Philippines — A cigarette vendor accused by his wife of raping their daughter was killed when he allegedly opened fire on policemen out to arrest him in Old Balara, Quezon City early Thursday morning.
The 43-year old suspect’s wife said she had filed a complaint against him with Quezon City Police District Station 6 on learning he had been raping their 13-year old daughter for the last six years, or since she was seven.
She said Wednesday night, the child came to her saying her father was mad at her.
She quoted her daughter as saying, “Hindi niya ako mahal bilang anak … mahal niya ako bilang asawa (He does not love me as a child … he loves me as a wife).”
“Nagulat ako. ‘Bakit mo sinasabi? Ginagahasa ka ba ni Papa mo’? ‘Opo’ (I was surprised. ‘Why do you say that? Is he raping you’? ‘Yes’),” she said.
She said she initially wanted to confront her husband but feared he might hurt or kill her so she reported him instead to the Quezon Police District Station 6 and asked that authorities arrest him.
However, when the arresting team arrived at their house, she said her husband opened fire at them and was killed when the officers retaliated.
“Nanlaban siya eh, hindi siya sumuko eh. Pero kung sumuko siya nagkakausap kami (He fought back instead of surrendering. But if he had given up we could have talked),” she said.
She said she did not know her husband kept a gun. But she confirmed “siya ang unang nagpaputok (he shot first).”
