Sigrid Andrea Bernardo’s most talked about romantic comedy, ‘Kita Kita’ is showing no signs of slowing down in terms of box office performance.

On its second week, the film cracked the P200 million mark and continues to break its own single day gross record when it earned P33 million last Saturday. At the rate audiences are trickling in droves, “Kita Kita” may again earn another P100 million when its third week starts this Wednesday even as it faces competition from Hollywood blockbusters like “Baby Driver” and “Atomic Blonde.”

The much-anticipated Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival also starts this Friday and will be screened in selected Ayala cinemas in addition to its usual home at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

But the momentum of “Kita Kita” may be strong enough to attract not just those who haven’t seen it but also those who want to see it again and again.

The film is getting one thumbs up endorsement after another not just from critics and audiences but also from delighted celebrities like Sharon Cuneta, Anne Curtis, KC Concepcion, Angelica Panganiban, Julie Ann San Jose, Alex Gonzaga, Gladys Reyes, Chynna Ortaleza, Yasmien Kurdi, Kakai Bautista, Diego Loyzaga and many more.

A guest appearance by lead stars Alessandra de Rossi and Empoy Marquez on Vice Ganda’s Sunday top-rated primetime show, “Gandang Gabi Vice” should also be a big boost.

Looking back, withdrawing from the Metro Manila Film Festival was the best thing that ever happened to “Kita Kita.” Its P200 million gross of “Kita Kita” is already about half of the MMFF’s total gross last year and is even higher than that of the MMFF’s top-grossing film, “Vince & Kath & James.”

The Star Cinema rom-com took 10 days to earn P100 million and reportedly had a total box office gross of P123 million by the end of its run.

The success of “Kita Kita” may have also helped generate and sustain interest in two other films, Topel Lee’s teen horror thriller, “Bloody Crayons” still on several cinemas on its third week and the John Lloyd Cruz-Sarah Geronimo rom-com “Finally Found Someone” which despite mixed reviews made P100 million within its first week.
