American indie electropop trio LANY (an acronym for Los Angeles New York) were among the standout performers in the Wanderland Music & Arts Festival held in Alabang last March.

Best known for hits like “ILYSB,” “Pink Skies,” “Good Girls,” “13,” “The Breakup,” and “Super Far,” the band caused quite a stir with their memorable stint in Wanderland which in turn led to a strong clamor for the band to return to Manila and headline their own concert here.

The wish of the band’s Filipino fans was granted when the group composed of singer-guitarist Paul Jason Klein, drummer Jake Goss and guitarist-keyboardist Les Priest arrived this weekend to perform a series of shows for Ayala Malls.

The band’s success, which Klein admits was “very do-it-yourself,” was quite the Cinderella story as they worked with what they had and using the latest mobile technology to their advantage. The vocals and instruments were captured through smartphone apps and the songs were recorded as they were written.

“We just decided: let’s make a band, stick the music online ourselves, and see what happens,” Klein recalled during their recent press conference to promote the mall shows.

When the trio uploaded their first song online, they had no social following, no fans, not even any photos. Today, LANY has over 100,000 followers each on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Klein alone has nearly 150,000 followers of his own on Instagram.

Since kicking off their world tour last July 20, LANY has so far performed to sell-out crowds in Australia, New Zealand, Shanghai and Bangkok.

And judging from the hordes of screaming fans that trooped to their shows and sang along to each song in Glorietta, Greenbelt and Alabang Town Center since Friday as well as those expected to show up at Market! Market! (3PM) and Trinoma (7PM) this Sunday, LANY is pretty much enjoying a huge following in the Philippines, too.
